Siding for additions and new builds

A family room on the back, a new garage, a whole new house: one call reaches an independent contractor that sides new work and blends it with what's already there.

New work

Matching the addition to the house

The hard part of siding an addition is the seam with the old house. Profile, exposure (the height of each course), color and trim all have to line up, or the new part shows from the street.

If the old siding can't be matched, some homeowners re-side the whole house along with the addition so it reads as one building. A contractor can price it both ways.

Additions go through Parma's Building Department on their own application, and if a project needs plan review, the city says it may take up to 30 days before a permit is issued (city page, applications).

Order of work

Where siding fits on a new build

  1. 1

    Sheathing and wrap

The walls are sheathed and wrapped, and windows are set and flashed.

  2. 2

Corner posts, window trim and starter strip go on first.

  3. 3

    Siding

Courses run up the wall, lined up with the existing house.

  4. 4

    Soffit and fascia

The eaves are closed in and the job is inspected.

Questions

Additions and new builds: common questions

Who pulls the permit for an addition?

Usually the general contractor for the addition. In Parma, every contractor working in the city must be registered with the Building Department before doing any work. Ask who is responsible before the job starts.

Can new siding match 20-year-old siding?

Sometimes the same profile is still made, but color fades. A contractor can bring samples to compare against the wall in daylight.

Siding cracked, loose or worn out?
